Renewing Intentions (Niyyah) for a Better Muslim
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Every journey towards becoming a better Muslim begins with one important step: renewing our intention (niyyah). In Islam, our intentions determine the value of our actions before Allah SWT. An act that appears ordinary can become an act of worship when it is done sincerely for His sake.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)
This hadith reminds us that sincerity is the foundation of every good deed. Whether we are praying, studying, working, helping our family, or serving our community, we should ask ourselves:
“Am I doing this to seek the pleasure of Allah?”
Renewing our niyyah is not something we do only once. It is a daily habit. As our hearts change and distractions arise, we should regularly pause and realign our intentions with the purpose of pleasing Allah.
Allah SWT says:
“Say, indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
(Surah Al-An’am 6:162)
A sincere intention brings barakah to our efforts, strengthens our relationship with Allah, and transforms even the smallest actions into acts of worship. Smiling at someone, earning a lawful income, caring for our parents, or learning beneficial knowledge all become sources of reward when done sincerely for Allah.
As we strive to become better Muslims, let us begin each day with a simple prayer:
“O Allah, make my intentions sincere for Your sake and accept all my deeds.”
May Allah SWT grant us sincerity in every action, steadfastness in our worship, and hearts that constantly seek His pleasure. Āmīn.
