True strength is not found in overpowering others, but in controlling ourselves when anger arises.
Anger is a natural human emotion. However, Islam teaches us that true strength lies in controlling our emotions and responding with patience, wisdom and good character.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The strong man is not the one who is good at wrestling, but the strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6114; Sahih Muslim 2609)
Allah ﷻ praises those who restrain their anger and forgive others:
“Who restrain anger and who pardon the people—and Allah loves the doers of good.”
(Surah Ali ’Imran, 3:134)
Five Sunnah Practices for Controlling Anger
1. Seek refuge in Allah: Recite A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim when anger arises.
2. Remain silent: Avoid speaking harshly or saying things that may hurt others.
3. Change your position: If you are standing, sit down. If anger persists, lie down.
4. Perform wudu: Taking time to perform ablution can help us regain composure and remember Allah.
5. Practise patience and forgiveness: Respond to difficult situations with wisdom instead of allowing anger to control your actions.
The Prophet ﷺ repeatedly advised a man:
لَا تَغْضَبْ
La taghdab — “Do not become angry.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6116)
A Reminder for Our Daily Lives
Whether at home, at work or within our community, we will encounter situations that test our patience.
Controlling anger does not mean suppressing our feelings or accepting injustice. Rather, it means addressing difficult situations without allowing our emotions to lead us towards wrongdoing.
Every moment of anger is an opportunity to practise the Sunnah, strengthen our character and seek Allah’s pleasure.
Final Reflection
Before reacting in anger, ask yourself:
Will my response please Allah, or will it cause unnecessary harm?
Remember, anger may last only a moment, but its consequences can last a lifetime.
May Allah ﷻ grant us patience, purify our hearts, protect our tongues from harmful speech and guide us towards the beautiful character of Rasulullah ﷺ.
Āmīn Ya Rabbal ’Ālamīn.
