Shukr (Gratitude): A Key to More Blessings

In our daily lives, it is easy to focus on what we do not have and overlook the countless blessings Allah has already given us. Islam teaches us Shukr (الشكر) — gratitude to Allah — as one of the greatest qualities of a believer.

Allah gives us a beautiful promise:

“If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more.”

(Surah Ibrahim, 14:7)

This verse teaches us that gratitude is not only a response to blessings; it is also a means of increasing blessings.

What Does Shukr Mean?

Shukr is more than simply saying Alhamdulillah. True gratitude involves three things:

1. Gratitude of the heart

Recognising that every blessing ultimately comes from Allah — our health, family, sustenance, knowledge, time and opportunities.

2. Gratitude of the tongue

Frequently praising Allah by saying Alhamdulillah, making du‘a and speaking positively about the blessings Allah has given us.

3. Gratitude through our actions

Using Allah’s blessings in ways that please Him. If Allah gives us wealth, we give charity. If He gives us knowledge, we benefit others. If He gives us health and strength, we use them in worship and good deeds.

The Prophet ﷺ: A Model of Gratitude

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the greatest example of gratitude.

‘Aishah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would stand in prayer at night until his feet became swollen. When she asked why he worshipped so intensely when Allah had forgiven him, he replied:

“Should I not be a grateful servant?”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

His worship was not merely performed out of obligation. It came from a heart filled with gratitude and love for Allah.

Gratitude Changes Our Perspective

Shukr teaches us to notice what Allah has given us instead of constantly comparing ourselves with others.

We may complain about our food while someone else struggles to find their next meal. We may complain about our home while another person longs for a safe place to sleep. We may take our family for granted until we experience separation or loss.

The believer learns to pause and say:

Alhamdulillah for what Allah has given me.

This does not mean that life will always be easy. A grateful believer can experience hardship, sadness and difficulty while still recognising the blessings that remain.

Prophet Sulayman عليه السلام and Gratitude

When Prophet Sulayman عليه السلام witnessed an extraordinary blessing from Allah, he said:

“This is from the favour of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful.”

(Surah an-Naml, 27:40)

This teaches us an important lesson: blessings themselves are a test.

The question is not only, “What has Allah given me?” but also:

“How am I using what Allah has given me?”

Wealth, knowledge, influence, health and time can all bring us closer to Allah when they are accompanied by gratitude.

Practising Shukr Every Day

Developing gratitude does not require something complicated. Begin with simple habits:

  • Say Alhamdulillah consciously throughout the day.
  • Remember three blessings Allah has given you before sleeping.
  • Thank people who have helped you.
  • Share your blessings through charity and kindness.
  • Avoid constantly comparing your life with others.
  • Use your time, health, wealth and abilities in obedience to Allah.
  • During difficulties, remember the blessings that still remain.

The Prophet ﷺ taught:

“Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi)

Therefore, gratitude should also shape the way we treat our parents, spouses, teachers, friends and everyone who does good to us.

A Heart Filled With Alhamdulillah

Shukr transforms the way we see life.

Instead of asking only, “Why don’t I have more?”, we begin asking:

“Have I thanked Allah for what I already have?”

Every breath is a blessing. Every opportunity to repent is a blessing. Every moment with our loved ones is a blessing. Above all, the blessing of Iman and guidance to Islam is greater than anything worldly we possess.

May Allah make us among His grateful servants, allow us to recognise His blessings in times of ease and hardship, and increase us in blessings that bring us closer to Him.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنَّا عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

O Allah, help us to remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best manner.
