Bismillah Ar Rahman Ar Rahim.
Alhamdulillah, all praise is due to Allah SWT who has granted us the opportunity to witness another Islamic New Year. Awal Muharram marks the beginning of a new Hijri year and serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their past deeds and renew their commitment to Allah SWT.
The Islamic calendar begins with the historic Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah. This migration was not merely a physical journey but a transformation from hardship to hope, from weakness to strength, and from oppression to the establishment of a righteous Muslim community.
Allah SWT says:
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:11)
Awal Muharram teaches us the importance of positive change. Just as the Prophet ﷺ and his companions sacrificed for the sake of Islam, we too should strive to leave behind sinful habits and increase our obedience to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of people are those whose lives are long and whose deeds are good.”
(Hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi)
As we enter the new Islamic year, we should:
* Renew our intentions and sincerity in worship.
* Increase our prayers, Qur’an recitation, and remembrance of Allah.
* Strengthen family ties and good character.
* Seek beneficial knowledge.
* Repent sincerely for our past mistakes.
The scholars have often reminded us that a believer should be better today than yesterday and better tomorrow than today. Therefore, Awal Muharram is an opportunity to set spiritual goals and strive towards becoming better servants of Allah SWT.
May Allah SWT grant us a year filled with faith, knowledge, barakah, and steadfastness upon the straight path.
1448H Mubarak. May Allah bless the new Islamic year for all of us.
